What you need to know about Bone Densitometry.

Bone Densitometry is used to detect osteoporosis, which is a disease that causes bone fragility and makes them more likely to break or fracture.

Modern technology allows us to do marvellous things. In the past, osteoporosis would often be undiagnosed until you broke a bone, by which time it would be extremely difficult to prevent or stunt subsequent deterioration. Now, a bone density test allows us to put these measures in place.

Very few. X-ray levels are low in a bone density test. The risks in a bone density scan is low and the amount of radiation is much less than is emitted during a chest X-ray. Of all the radiology procedures, a bone density test is one of the procedures that has the shortest X-ray exposure times.

Losing at least 4cm in height could result from compression fractures in the spine.

Fragility fractures indicate fragile bones. Sometimes even a strong cough or sneeze can result in fragility fractures.

An organ or bone marrow transplant places one at higher risk of osteoporosis, since anti-rejection drugs can interfere with the bone-rebuilding process.

Long-term steroid medication use (like prednisone) can interfere with the bone-rebuilding process and may lead to osteoporosis.

After menopause a woman’s oestrogen levels may drop during certain cancer treatments, while some prostate cancer treatments reduce testosterone levels in men. This can lead to bone weakness.
